vrtti means literally to turn away. the perceptions that the mind imposes on the matrix of what actually is are all projections: partial, limited, conditioned and circumstantial. these projections arise because awareness moves away from that which actually is into the invention of objects of perception within the narrowing arc of attention. all perceptions are projections of the mind and do not exist as such, but only as conditional constructs in the perceiving mind.
vrtii are neither good, nor bad. simply inevitable. difficulty arises when they are taken to be that which actually exists. whereas they are what appear when that which actually exists is turned away from. this turning away must arise for the navigation necessary to life to take place. taking projections to be actual (avidya) is the ultimate source of all suffering. denying their inevitability and their functional value is the cause of unnecessary suffering. taking their recipient, the mind as the localisation of consciousness, to be actual is the essential source of all suffering. this is known as identification with projection.
by virtue
of interpenetration the notionappearence imposed
by the mind dissolves. this dis-appearance is the surrender of the projection
to awareness, and the surrendering of the projection has occurred.
surrender
is not a question of control of any kind. quite the opposite. we cannot make
the projections stop. although if we are selfdeceptive we can persuade ourselves
that we have by imposing a sustained projection of emptiness, silence or stillness
on the mind. this is nothing but manipulative aggression. it is, however, as
far as many people go in their meditation, and though it may be superficially
and childishly rewarding as a deluded indication of presumed achievement it
makes no difference to the status of our being. we are still snared in identification
with our mental projections, or their apparent absence.
